Redbox is famous for offering movies to rent from big, bright red kiosks situated in front of stores all over the United States.

Now, Redbox is expanding its business ventures into the 21st century with the launch of its own streaming service: Redbox On Demand. Launched in Dec. 2017, the service currently offers more than 7,000 different movies from all of the major Hollywood studios to be rented or purchased for online viewing.

Basically, Redbox On Demand is a more a-la-carte option for those that do not want to pay monthly for other streaming services; customers only pay for what they choose to watch.

However, like other streaming services, movies received from Redbox On Demand can be watched from any streaming device including phones, tablets, computers, Rokus and Smart TVs, and all are available through the Redbox app and website. Any purchased movies can also be downloaded to be watched offline.

Each movie varies in price, but the average movie starts at $1.99 to rent for 48 hours while purchasing a movie costs around $3.99 per film. In comparison, Netflix’s most basic plan is $8 per month.

Redbox On Demand gives more flexibility for users to stream content that they are interested in, instead of paying for a bulk streaming service. Some of the most popular movies currently offered by Redbox’s streaming service include “Dunkirk,” “It” and “Happy Death Day.”

Partnerships with major studios like Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. has ensured that Redbox On-Demand has access to popular, recently released movies as well as older classics. Users of Redbox On Demand can also rent or purchase popular TV shows.

Some of the titles currently offered include “Atlanta,” “Fear the Walking Dead” and “Empire.” Each episode can be purchased or downloaded.

Although Redbox is moving towards expanding its online-based streaming operations, there are no plans to eliminate the kiosk rental services the company offers. In fact, more new releases are coming to the 36,000 kiosks in March, including “Lady Bird,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”
