10 Things Fans Want to See in “Bojack Horseman” Season 5

Okay yes, there will probably be black comedy and nihilism, but this list is more specific.

The most important day of the year is almost upon us. That’s right, the new season of “Bojack Horseman” premiers Sept. 14, and it’s no doubt ready to make fans laugh, cry and want to die alone. Before you prepare for your metaphorical death, though, here’s a list of a few things you should look out for this season.

10. Mr. Peanutbutter & Diane

After Mr. Peanutbutter’s run as governor and Diane’s coverage of his term, their marriage is practically over. The library fiasco was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. Even though their marriage won’t ever be the same, fans can’t be sure they will get divorced.

Mr. Peanutbutter is no stranger when it comes to having an ex-wife, but he might be tired of breakups. Diane might be exhausted by Mr. Peanutbutter’s antics, but she knows he isn’t a bad person and, more importantly, she doesn’t really know what to do with herself.

Each time Diane tried to follow her gut she didn’t get the end result she wanted. Maybe fans will get to see them stay together (in the loosest of terms), or at the very least take it slow with signing the papers.

9. Todd & Emily

Now that Todd has accepted he’s asexual, he needs to find a good friend. Since he has little interest in reconnecting with Bojack and Mr. Peanutbutter is only good for wacky hijinks and bad business ideas, Emily is the most likely candidate, and that is good news for fans.

Todd works best when he’s constantly at someone’s side. If he’s left on his own for too long, his misadventures range from kind of funny (getting lost in a hotel) to just plain weird (training clown dentists). When tied to a character, fans get the genius of “Smoodies” and Halloween stores in January and the classic “Shut up, Todd!”

Emily has dated Todd and already had one successful business venture with him, so it’ll be interesting to see what adventures they get into. Assuming Emily is truly over Todd, of course — which adds another layer to the relationship worth exploring,

8. Todd & Bojack

The disastrous dynamic duo of Bojack and Todd went together like oil and water. Except, the oil did its best to trap the water from being free and reaching its full potential, and… yeah, I don’t know where I was going with this. The point is that, as of now, Todd has cut the cord and is done with Bojack.

This makes Todd one of the few characters able to get out of Bojack’s destructive path before it totally wrecked his life (not like he had much going in his life anyway). He doesn’t hate the horse, at least not actively — he just knows he can’t be around him. That sense of apathy messes with Bojack, and whether they become actual friends or not, their interactions will be a joy to witness.

7. Princess Carolyn & Her Relationship Status

Everyone’s favorite manager has not been doing well in the dating scene. Rutabaga was a bust and Bojack is Bojack, but her time with Ralph seemed very promising. However, Princess Carolyn ended that relationship when, after revealing her five past miscarriages to him, Ralph suggested looking at alternative ways to start a family.

Our fierce feline will mostly likely be single at the start of the season, and fans wonder what her next move will be. Will she reunite with Ralph? Will she bury herself in her work? Or will she try starting a family all on her own? Also, here’s to hoping her ex-assistant Judah makes an appearance this season.

6. Bojack & His Mother

Oh, man. Since the first season, it was made clear that Bojack had a bad childhood thanks to his parents, especially his mother. The woman told her own son he was and always will be poison. That alone made her an easy antagonist, but after season four delved into her character, it became extremely hard to hate Beatrice.

Her life was traumatic to say the absolute least, and now she is an old woman suffering from dementia. Bojack acknowledged his mother’s ailment and chose to not rip into her, a huge step in the right direction for him. If Beatrice doesn’t bite the dust in this new season, how Bojack deals with (or avoids) his mother has the potential to be a nexus for his personal growth.

5. Bojack & Diane

Arguably the two most miserable characters in the show, seeing Diane and Bojack’s relationship develop throughout the show has been rewarding, if not difficult, to watch. They’re often brought together after they pushed others away.

Bojack and Diane remain constants in each other’s lives, even if they are at odds with each other (or one of them just up and leaves L.A.). They can depend on each other in a way they can’t with anyone else. With Bojack working on a new show and Diane shaping up to be an ex-wife, fans are certainly in for a treat whenever these two share the screen.

4. Bojack & Penny

Bojack has done a lot of shitty things to a lot of people. To keep it short, the guy is a shitty friend, a shitty boyfriend and a shitty employee, but none of that comes close to a middle-aged man almost having sex with a teenage girl just because he couldn’t have the girl’s mother.

Thankfully, the writers spared the audience of following a protagonist that would be a rapist in some states. Still, the damage was done and, in true Bojack fashion, more followed when Bojack tracked Penny down during an inebriated attempt to make amends with her.

Penny herself is unlikely to make an appearance this season, but maybe her mother will show up to uphold her promise to kill Bojack if he ever came near Penny again. This season could also use the incident as a #MeToo story that could put a serious dent in Bojack’s career and personal life.

3. Bojack & Hollyhock

Fans expected Hollyhock to be Bojack’s daughter, but she was instead revealed to be his half-sister. Bojack clearly wants to be loved and secretly longs for a stable family life, and Holly introduces a unique way for Bojack to fulfill those desires. Since Holly is not his daughter, the pressure to be a father figure is taken off Bojack.

Holly has also shown Bojack that she doesn’t need or want to put up with his shit, but enjoys his company when he isn’t having an episode. Bojack needs Holly more than she needs him and that will no doubt play a role in his behavior this season. Even if Holly doesn’t get a lot of screen time, her presence will no doubt have Bojack rethink some of his actions, even if just for an extra second.

2. Bojack Be Better

As previously established, Bojack isn’t a good person. His childhood was crap, but from what fans have saw, his adult life has been pretty good. He could’ve made some different choices that might have made him happy, but the same could be said for anyone.

The thing is, Bojack isn’t a loner, amazing given his incredibly destructive nature. What is even more amazing is that he has people rooting for him, and that includes the viewers. Bojack has always wanted to improve and has made small strides in an effort to be a better person. He usually just screws it up right away, which is why it would be pleasing to fans for Bojack to just keep one solid personal win, no matter how small.

1. Vincent Adultman

The man every fan wants more of! No doubt fans will have their eyes glued to the screen in anticipation of this cherished character making a cameo. Who knows? He might even get his own episode!

Will fans finally get an inside look into his meetings? Maybe peek into his dating life? Will his son make an appearance? Clearly, Vincent Adultman is and always will be the primary character fans want to see in a new season of Bojack.
