Meet Edwin Saucedo, the Student Body President of USC
Saucedo, the first in his family to go to college, had always dreamed of being the school’s student figurehead.

1. What is your major? I am a double major in Political Science, as well as Public Policy, Planning, and Development with an emphasis in Sustainable Planning.
2. What is your dream job? If I had to pick, probably being the Mayor of Los Angeles.
3. What academic focus most interests you? Within Political Science, I have really focused on Asian American and East Asian Politics. In my Public Policy degree, my focus is on Community and Economic Development.
4. What are your intellectual strengths? Curiosity, critical thinking and reasoning
5. What will you never understand? I will never understand traffic. If all the cars are moving and there are no accidents, why does it always take two hours to travel fifteen miles in LA?
6. What qualities do you most admire in a person? I really admire people who are able to get back up no matter how many times they fall down. I have admiration for resilience, perseverance and drive.
7. What is your most marked characteristic? I love to think big picture and vision. I never want to constrain myself to what is, but instead I like to think about what could be.
8. What angers you? The political apathy of a lot of our college students and young adults. The refusal to engage in the political system disappoints me.
9. What is currently on your mind? My midterm tomorrow unfortunately.
10. What historical figure do you admire? I admire Hillary Clinton. Her resilience and strength to always keep fighting and never give up is something I have always admired about her.
11. What fictional character do you most identify with? I haven’t read a lot of fiction in the last couple of years, but I always resonated with Holden Caulfield from “Catcher in the Rye.”
12. What movie has had the biggest impact on your life? “The Lion King.” As a kid I used to watch it at least once a week, so by far one of my favorite movies. Also, where else would you get tips on leadership?
13. Who are some of your favorite authors? Malcolm Gladwell, J.D. Salinger and Michelle Alexander
14. What music are you into at the moment? I am really into the new Frank Ocean album. My taste in music is pretty subpar, though; you can catch me listening to Top 40 most of the time.
15. What is your favorite place on the internet? I read Politico religiously, I always get a good laugh from Buzzfeed and spend too much time on Facebook.
16. What is your favorite meme? All of the memes that came out after Melania Trump plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech at the RNC always give me a good laugh.
17. Where do you take most of your selfies? At football games when I run into random friends.
18. Who is your favorite person to follow on Snapchat? No one in particular. I am bigger fan of following people on Instagram.
19. What is your favorite Instagram account? @lafoodieguy Everything he posts just makes you hungry.
20. What is your most treasured possession? My passport. I love traveling and exploring new countries.
21. What is your favorite alcoholic beverage? I am a big fan of Jagerbombs.
22. What is your typical outfit? Shorts and a button-up. My friends like to call it “Cabana Boy.”
23. What is your favorite place to eat? I am a foodie so I like to try out different places all the time, but you can never go wrong with In-N-Out.
24. What’s a secret talent of yours? The secret is I am not talented, or at least that I haven’t discovered my talents yet.
25. Where do you want to go most in the world? South Africa. There is so much to explore and so many different sceneries; it looks amazing.
26. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’m a huge procrastinator, so that’s something I am always trying to work on changing.
27. What is your definition of failure? Failing to try
28. If you were to have children, what would you name them? Nathaniel, Alexander…. I don’t know, I’m not thinking about having children. I’m a little more worried about finding a job or going to grad school to be honest.
29. Where would you be if not in college? Volunteering or working with underserved communities in the outskirts of Los Angeles, helping create a pipeline for students to get to college.
30. What makes you nervous? Not knowing where I will be or what I will be doing in ten years.
31. What is your biggest indulgence? Desserts. Any type of desserts.
32. What living person would you most like to meet? Sonia Sotomayor. She has such a unique background and is an inspiration to me.
33. What is important to you right now? Giving a voice to underrepresented groups. In my position as President I hope to serve all students, especially the ones who don’t have a seat in the boardroom.
34. What is your greatest achievement? This summer I represented the United States at the G20 Youth Summit in China, where I gave a speech on segregation across the world and led negotiations on behalf of our country.
I also pride myself on being the first in my family to go to college, as being the Student Body President of USC was always a dream of mine.
