When everyday life is getting too much or just becoming slightly mundane, it is great to escape to another world for an hour or so and forget about everything. Fantasy is one of the most popular genres of entertainment, and with good reason. It provides an exciting alternative to our normal lives.

Television

Ever since the enormous success of “Game of Thrones,” there has been a scramble to create more epic fantasy content for television. A number of developers are attempting to match the popularity of the HBO series which was based on George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, and there is certainly a viewer base ready and waiting.

There are high hopes for Amazon’s reimagining of J.R.R Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings.” The series is expected to be different to Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy and could explore other areas of Middle Earth mythology. Netflix is set to do battle with its streaming rival, and will release “The Witcher” later this year. The series will be based on the book saga by Andrzej Sapkowski and the games from CD Projekt Red.

Gaming

Gaming is one of the most accessible forms of escapism, and there is a wide mix of fantasy offerings for the various platforms. In the world of iGaming, players can play Pixies of the Forest at Lucky Pants Bingo. On mobile, there are options like “Stardew Valley.” For console and PC gamers, the list of epic fantasy RPGs is so long that it would be a struggle to even name them all. Some of the most notable franchises are “Final Fantasy” and “The Elder Scrolls,” and there are numerous other titles which have been surprise hits. Anyone thinking about watching the Netflix “Witcher” series should consider playing “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” first. The open-world fantasy epic has it all, from intriguing storylines to rich and detailed characters. There are also some great side quests and mini games to keep the gameplay varied and interesting.

Books

While television and gaming can be highly immersive, there’s arguably no better way to escape the real world than to curl up with a thrilling fantasy novel. One of the most talked about sagas around right now is “The Kingkiller Chronicle” by Patrick Rothfuss. The first book, “The Name of the Wind,” was released in 2007, and the second installment, “The Wise Man’s Fear,” hit shelves in 2011. These two novels have sold over 10 million copies already, and the third book, titled “The Doors of Stone,” is still to be released. Indeed, fans are getting impatient as they hunger for a conclusion to the awesome adventure.

Of course, there are plenty of fantasy films out there to enjoy as well. It’s still hard to beat the classics like the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “Willow,” but there are other offerings set to hit screens in the near future.
