Supernatural recap, Season 12 – Episode 01, “Keep Calm and Carry On”, Aired Oct. 13, 2016
It’s back! Welcome to Season 12 of Supernatural, ya’ll! WOO!
Dean and Mama Winchester. We pick up right where we left off with Dean seeing his mom for the first time. After she freaks out a bit, he convinces her that it’s him. Can we stop and appreciate the look on Dean’s face when he hugs his mom? Also, what other grown man do you know that can list every single detail of how his parents met? Or their wedding? Dean is so precious.
Sam’s in a pickle. So Sam is shot in the leg and the lady from the Men of Letters, Toni, stops at a vet’s house to get it stitched up so she can properly torture him. (What a b*tch!) She wants to know the names of other hunters so that she can visit them. It seems the British Men of Letters have a legit operation and they kill monsters as soon as they enter Britain. Sam is total bad-ass and refuses to break. She injects him with some goo which makes him freak out and start seeing crazy visions of people he has killed or hurt. He totally fakes Toni out by pretending to cut his throat and ALMOST escapes. I’m going to throw down a prediction right now and say that Sam is for sure going to mack it with this lady at some point.
Reunited! Cas thought that Dean was dead and was so, so happy to see him! I love the awkward little moment when Cas meets Mary. I have a feeling these two are going to be pals. Speaking of Cas, he is not screwing around this season and uses force a few times. Mary, Dean and Cas start following the trail to find Sam. They find the vet that fixed up Sam and use his phone to call Toni. You can totally tell by Toni’s face that she had no idea Dean was alive and something tells me that she wouldn’t have taken Sam if she did know. She sends her torture lady after them and she hits Baby. After a crazy fight, Mary kills the woman. She’s adjusting to the hunter life quick but doesn’t seem too happy about it.

Lucifer is having some trouble. He has demons running errands and cleaning up bodies of folks with burnt out eyes. Turns out Lucifer is trying to find a proper vessel. Crowley kills the demons and sets out to look for Lucifer himself, following the trail of bodies. In the preview it looks like we will see the new Lucifer in the next episode!
It was an action packed return, but compared to the intensity of Season 11, this felt quiet. A good quiet though. After a season with God and God’s sister, it’s time to zero in on the core group. I am ready to focus on Cas, Dean, Sam and now Mary and the adjustments they must make now that Mama Winchester is back in the mix. Mary’s emotional state already reminds me of Sam’s struggle with the hunter’s life from the beginning of the series.
Side note: Every member of the Winchester family has had sex in that car.
