College Daybreak - Cost causes politicians to rethink Afghan war

Posted by admin on Tuesday, May 31, 2011

U.S. involvement in Afghanistan will cost $113 billion this fiscal year. It will cost another $107 billion in the next.

Quick facts:

  • It costs $1 million per year for each soldier in Afghanistan. That's significantly higher than in Iraq. Afghanistan's terrain makes it more difficult and expensive to supply the troops.
  • The U.S. will be funding Afghanistan's military for the foreseeable future. The Afghan army needs $6 to $8 billion annually to function, money the Afghan government simply does not have.
  • Afghanistan's total annual budget is $1.5 billion.

The high cost of the war is causing Republican and Democratic politicians to rethink policies in Afghanistan.
