The winners The BoomBachs...oh and me and the other judges...and giant checks...naturallyyy

If you missed College Battle of the bands--Southwest edition--last night, well hell...you missed out.

I had the honor/pleasure of being one of the judges, and the four kick-ass bands made it a more difficult job than I ever could've imagined. If we're talking American Idol analogies, I'm far less of a Simon and far more of a Paula--i.e. I love freaking EVERYONE and just want to take out a loan or 60 and buy a record label and sign them all.

(Actually maybe I'm more of a Randy...I do say "dawg" a lot.)

the fabulous Flula doing his emcee thang

(Actually maybe none because isn't it JLo and Stephen Tyler or something now?! Eh, whatever.)

But anyways, everyone did an AMAZING job, and the first thing I did when I got home was Google the shit out of them to find out where I could hear them online. Here's a brief (as brief as is possible for me, that is) synopsis of the contestants.

Like 1/4 of The BoomBachs

The BoomBachs

Never have I everrrrrrrrrrr seen a show with SO. MUCH. ENERGY. It's like they all drank a Redline...and chased it with coffee...that was laced with cocaine.  Except there was far less tweaking and more JAMMING OUT as the 8-piece band from Denton--specializing in a genre they dubbed "space gospel"--blew the roof off of The Varsity Bar with a sick and completely unique take on music that incorporated everything from saxophone to guitar to trumpet to rap. Bottom line--they know how to put on a hell of a show.

more BoomBachs

The BoomBachs guys won some sick prizes too, including some big cash, 2 amps from Ampeg, a YEAR'S supply of coconut water (I'm actually the most jealous about that), some other awesome shit  and--most of all--A SLOT TO COMPETE IN L.A. FOR THE NATIONAL FINALE.

Look out, baby. Check them out (and give some love with a 'like')  at http://www.facebook.com/TheBoomBachs and theboombachs.net. Holla with a follow @TheBoomBachs.

So. Sick. (iPhone pics--sorrryyy)

Another band with phenomenal energy who looked like they were having the times of their lives onstage, The Ruxpins out of Beaumont KILLED it last night with their unique brand of Americana Rock that brought the audience to their feet. Really fun music. Really fun guys. Highly recommended. Like The Soggy Bottom boys...but betta. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry 'bout it.) Check 'em out at http://www.facebook.com/theruxpins or theruxpins.com and tweet sweet nothings to them @TheRuxpins.

A little Rikavista interview action

This Austin alt-indie band was also oh-so-sick, rocking shit first  in the lineup and kicking things off, and I was totally digging it. What I'm also totally digging? The fact that they're description on Facebook is "Like a thousand honey bees doing the dougie to Peter Frampton."

WHATTTT!? I don't know, but I love where that's going. A group of four guys, they had a fabulous female singer helping them out onstage and I was pretty in love with that they were doing. And with their really big drum. Check 'em out at http://www.facebook.com/rikavista, hear them at http://www.reverbnation.com/rikavista and tweet the SHIT out of them @rikavista.

Robot Williams

gettin' itttt

And, finally, the fourth phenomenal contestant out of Austin, the four-man group, Robot Williams. Homeboys have the kind of rock that makes me involuntarily head bob and I was SO stoked that they came prepared with CDs...because I've been blasting the HELL out of mine since last night. Essentially, it's semi-intense at points but catchy (reminds me a little of Blink 182) music I can imagine jamming inappropriately loud in my car driving through quiet neighborhoods (I live on the edge), and I'm kind of obsessing. Check 'em at http://www.facebook.com/robotwilliams or http://robotwilliams.bandcamp.com/. And tell them they need to get a Twitter account.
